Pay per click (PPC) advertising is a search engine marketing technique. It is an advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content websites/blogs, where advertisers only pay when a user clicks on an ad link to their website. Advertisers bid on keywords they believe their target market would type in to search engines when shopping for their product type. When a user types this keyword, the advertiser’s ad may be shown. These ads are called “sponsored links” and appear next to the organic results on the search engine results pages.

This type of online marketing is very cost effective. An advertising company only pays they agreed amount for the advert if a searcher clicks on the sponsored link advertisement. Hence the name Pay Per Click. However, the company does have to pay every time that someone click on the sponsored link, so it is very important to make the link to a strong website that will get sales to a reasonable percent of the visitors.
