Really Simple Syndication

RSS is a group of Web feed formats used to announce regularly updated content such as blog entries, news pages or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a “feed,” “web feed,” or “channel,” contains either a synopsis of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to avoid spam and keep up with their favorite sites in an automated way that is much easier than checking manually.

RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” although there are a number of alternative descriptions.

RSS content can be read using software called an “RSS reader,” “feed reader” or an “aggregator.” The user signs up to a feed by entering the feed’s link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that starts up the subscription process for you. The reader scans the user’s subscribed feeds on a systematic basis for new content and downloads any updates.
RSS allows you to easily stay informed by recovering the latest content from your sites of interest and saving laborious time searching manually. Also, privacy is ensured, with no need to join each site’s email newsletter. The volume of sites displaying RSS feeds is rapidly developing and currently includes the likes of Yahoo News.
